Yazd, Iran's first historic city on UNESCO's world heritage list
Independent Aggregator of News/Event related to Iran, Kodoom.com: According to UNESCO, The World Heritage Committee meeting in Krakow, Poland, has unanimously placed Yazd city in Iran on World Heritage List as well as cultural sites in Denmark, France, Germany, Poland, and the Russian Federation, along with one that spans Croatia, Italy and Montenegro.
According to Mehr, Iran’s UNESCO-listed cities, such as Shahr-e-Soukhteh, are all uninhabited, which would make Yazd the first city on the coveted list inhabited by a large population. Iran currently has 21 world heritage sites, more than any other country in the Middle East.
Located in central Iran, Yazd (see panorama HERE) is believed to be the world’s oldest adobe city, boasting a historical texture covering 2,270 hectares, of which 195.67 hectares have been proposed for UNESCO-listed status. The world=renowned "Badgir" or wind towers (wind trappers) used in Yazd homes are among the earliest and the most innovative architectural elements used to create naturally cooling drafts in homes located in warm climates.
While addressing the session, representative of Azerbaijan Republic, Kuwait, and Turkey supported selection of Yazd and referred to the multicultural character of Yazd and peaceful coexistence of various religions like Islam, Zoroastrianism and Zenith.
Last year UNESCO added Persian New Year, Nowruz, Lavash flat bread, and Iran's ancient water channels (Qanats) to its world cultural heritage list.
