Ieoh Ming Pei was born in Canton (now Guangzhou) in 1917 to a prosperous banker’s family. He grew up in Hong Kong and Shanghai, the city known as “the Paris of the East,” where Pei had his first encounters with Western design. From an early age he was fascinated by buildings.
