Introduction
Although the Islamic Republic of Iran holds one of the richest crude oil and gas proven reserves of the world, it is among the countries which have the highest consumption rate of fossil fuels. Transportation sector as one of the most important economic sectors of the country has allocated a significant portion of consuming oil products, especially gasoline, to itself. A clear proof for this claim can be observed in the light of the two-digit growth rate of gasoline consumption during the last decade.
Due to such a severe growth rate of gasoline consumption, Iran has become one of the biggest gasoline importers in the world. However, the Islamic Republic of Iran holds one of the biggest proven gas reserves in the world; and in this regard it has a special position among the fossil fuel reserves' owners. A simple calculation can clearly indicate a clear relationship between these two statements.
The world's second gas reserves holder may link the high consuming sector of its economy, in terms of oil products, to gas reservoirs. The result is clear cut. Rather than spending billions of dollars on importing gasoline and bearing with its undesirable economic and political consequences, natural gas, as a clean fuel, in the transportation system can substitute gasoline. It is obvious that achieving CNG industry long term plans, which guarantees self sufficiency in this regard; and becoming one of the CNG industry technology holders, requires national will and contribution of all the state and private entities, academic and research centers in implementation of this strategic and national project.
